For the first time, it hit me in more than a vague, abstract way that maybe his living body would come back to me, but his soul wouldn’t.
Oh my heart. The emotions were a lot in this one, and even if I was prepared for some of it, the pining and longing from Iván took me by surprise.
I have to admit that I’ve been a little hesitant to pick this one up, since I knew it would be a bit heavy. It wasn’t entirely what I had been expecting – it was more heavy than sad, and the love that Iván and Isadoro shared was truly something special. The pining was fantastic, and the single PoV helped to make it more intense since Iván wasn’t sure about Isadoro’s feelings for him.
Iván was precious, and it was obvious how much Isadoro meant to him. It had been the two of them since they were kids, and it was sweet to see glimpses of their past and memories that they shared. It didn’t take long until they started hooking up again as they had done as teenagers, and I liked the hints of possessiveness from Isadoro. He was struggling a lot with adjusting to the life of a civilian after several deployments, and it was difficult to see his stages of depression and the helplessness that Iván felt.
The mental health struggles felt a little heavy at times, it was very well written though and I loved the hurt / comfort that it brought. I liked how Marina Vivanco wrote the contrasts between Isadoro’s good and bad times, and the way it also affected Iván – how he was going back and forth between feeling happy, fearful, hopeful and sad depending on Isadoro’s mood. It was clear how connected they were to each other, and I loved seeing them together. They weren’t great at communicating, and it was frustrating at times, but it also added to the pining and tension between them.
Nights Without Night was an emotional and beautiful love story between childhood friends. I loved all of their shared history, and the hurt / comfort was exactly as amazing as to be expected from Marina Vivancos!
“You,” he says quietly, a breath of air. I nuzzle against him, mind blank.
“Me, what?” I mumble.
“You,” he repeats simply and kisses me again.
