Too Like the Lightning was a gorgeously written and very character driven story – a slow and quiet, almost poetic love story dripping with descriptions and emotions!

Andrew and Coley met after a bruised and subdued Andrew ended up living at his friends house during the summer. His life had been turned upside down, and he was looking to bury himself in his writing and work. Coley was doing work around the property he stayed on, and Andrew started helping him with the labour.

They connected almost instantly with each other, and I liked their interactions. Andrew’s feelings for Coley were building steadily, and even if they were opposites in a lot of ways, they still found some common grounds. The single PoV helped to rack up the tension quite a bit at the beginning, since I couldn’t tell if the attraction was mutual or if Andrew was pining for a straight man.

While I was impressed by the storytelling and writing, the story ended up dragging a little too much for me in the second half. Once Andrew and Coley acted on the tension between them there just wasn’t enough plot left to keep me intrigued. Some of Andrew’s inner monologues also felt too long and repetitive after a while.

Too Like the Lightning was overall a beautifully told story, and there were quite a few things I enjoyed about it, but it didn’t quite manage to keep my interest all the way through.
