We Were Never Lovers by Sasha Avice

We Were Never Lovers is part of the Contested Possession series.

This was a story that tugged hard on my heartstrings and had me sobbing at times – what Jack and Sean went through was absolutely heartbreaking.

I loved how the author wrote the amnesia plot and Sean’s confusion about having Jack taking care of him. There was plenty time to speculate and wonder about what these two men really were to each other. The tension and hurt / comfort was amazing, and it was easy to get intrigued by Jack and Sean and their history together. It’s definitely one of the best amnesia stories I’ve read!

How it begins…

Sean’s eyes wouldn’t open. He was awake, he knew he was awake, but his eyelids felt like they were sealed shut with concrete.

Tropes

  • amnesia
  • sport
  • forced proximity
  • teammates
  • hurt / comfort

“Are we lovers?” Sean asked.
Jack fumbled with the tray, eyes flicking to Sean’s, before he righted it with a mumbled, “Shit,” and stepped back hastily, his hands wiping at nothing on the front of his shorts.
“We were never lovers,” he said quickly and went back to the kitchen.

What to expect

  • emotional & heart-wrenching
  • slowly puzzling pieces together
  • Australian football players
  • former rivals
  • two years of lost memories
  • tension & attraction
  • lots of history between MCs

There was no world in which Jack didn’t love Sean and while he still believed, when no one else seemed to, that Sean would remember them, if he didn’t—
There was no world in which Jack didn’t love Sean.
